Functional electrical stimulation with STIWELL

None

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is offered by the Occupational Therapy department.

In functional electrical stimulation electrical signals from the stimulation device (brand name: STIWELL) are transmitted with so-called adhesive electrodes through the skin to the muscle. The electrical stimulation helps to strengthen muscles, promote blood circulation, muscle regeneration and relaxation, pain relief as well as the re-initiation of movements (e.g. grasping, releasing, hand to mouth movement).

Electrical stimulation may not be used on people with pacemakers, those who are pregnant, with febrile diseases and infections, thrombosis or inflammatory skin diseases. Hypertension is not a contraindication. Spasticity can be reduced if used correctly. The approval of the doctor underlies a classification of this method of therapy.
